Background

Kerala Horticulture Development Programme was formed in the year 1993 with the financial support of the European Union and Government of Kerala. The total project outlay was Rs 131.95 crores (33 million Euros). After a series of studies seven districts of Kerala were identified for the launch of the project. Activities were first launched in villages of T rivandrum,  Ernakulam and Kottayam and gradually over the years the programme has spread to the other districts.

Since 1993 KHDP has experimented and refined several agricultural practices which have been able to effectively address the felt needs of the farmers.

  • Only agriculture organisation in India to succeed without giving subsidies and free handouts to farmers
  • Stressing on concepts such as Self Help Groups and adopting ideas such as Participatory Technology Development, helped farmers to find solutions for their problems
  • Improved the income of farmers through  innovative credit package, office-less extension system, farmer owned and managed markets etc.

KHDP is a silent development experiment that is being carried out by a dedicated and missionary team aiming to create more effective policies and grass root institutions to solve problems of ordinary farmers.
