PTD is

  • Empowerment of farmers through farmers participation
  • Facilitated by scientists and extension personnel
  • Development of technology combining indigenous knowledge and scientific findings
  • Based on location specific needs and locally available resources

Objectives of PTD

  •  Enable rural farming communities to meet their felt needs through use of farmer centered methods
  • Empower individual farmers and farming communities to generate, upgrade and adopt new technologies
  • Enhance farmers capacity to develop sustainable farming systems
  • As a powerful tool for technology development and dissemination

Steps

  1. "Getting started" - Gathering information about the farming community and building rapport with farmers
  2. "Participatory problem identification" - identification and prioritisation of problems
  3. "Looking for things to try" - seeking options, review of options, selection of options by farmers
  4. "Experimentation"- design and layout in the field, monitoring and recording of observations
